If you’ve ever dreamed of spending a summer in the Colorado mountains—waking up to fresh air, quiet neighborhoods, and endless outdoor opportunities—working at Island Acres Resort Motel offers a rare chance to do just that.

Island Acres isn’t just a place to work. It’s a place to live well, stay active, and experience everything that makes Gunnison special. For workampers and seasonal staff, the balance is intentional: meaningful work hours paired with plenty of time to explore the rivers, trails, mountains, and vast forest that surround us.

Your Time Off: Mountains, Water, and Wide-Open Space

One of the biggest benefits of working at Island Acres is what happens after your shift ends.

Located on the edge of downtown Gunnison, the property provides easy access to:

  •  World-class fishing on the Gunnison River
  • Scenic hiking and trail systems just minutes away
  • Mountain biking routes for every skill level
  • Quiet neighborhood walks and evening sunsets
  • Blue Mesa Reservoir—Colorado’s largest body of water
  • Quick trips into town for coffee, local shops, great dining, and community events

With a 20–25 hour workweek during the busy season, you’ll still have ample time to enjoy Colorado summers the way they’re meant to be experienced—outside, moving, and immersed in nature.

Living and Working on a Beautiful, Walkable Property

Island Acres sits on three landscaped acres, creating a peaceful, spacious environment that feels more like a small retreat than a traditional motel property. With just 17 retro-style units, the pace is friendly and personal. Most guests are return visitors, including some who have been vacationing here for over two decades years. We have incredible bird watching right on the property, plenty of bunnies and squirrels, and are often visited by the neighborhood deer.

Workampers tend to appreciate:

  •  The walkable property that keeps you active
  • The quiet residential setting with welcoming neighbors
  • Owners who are often on-site and invested in the property
  • The strong sense of pride in maintaining a well-loved space
  • Interacting with gracious guests
  • Proximity to peaceful walking trails both in the neighborhood and across the highway at the Gunnison Whitewater Park.
